Mounting an RFM69 Radio Transceiver on 2.54mm prototype PCB or breadboard

We think the RFM69 modules (from HopeRF) are teriffic.

The only challenge for the hobbyist is that these transceiver do not use a standard 0.1″/2.54mm hole spacing, as used on prototype boards or breadboards. Rather they use 2mm spacing, with castellated pads. So, though you can use tinned wire links to convert from 2mm spacing to 2.54mm spacing, it can be a bit untidy.

To make life a little easier for other RFM60 users, we have created two different variants of adapter PCBs. These adapter PCBs convert the pin spacing to fit the modules onto board with ‘standard’ 0.1″/2.54mm spacing. Overall they deliver a tidier and more-pleasing result.

A larger adapter that offers both flexible antenna connections, and through-hole pads to mount ancillary components to meet the Reference Design in the HopeRF data sheet. This will also fit wider breadboards or two breadboards side-by-side, as is sometimes used with other wide-format devices.

A smaller adapter that enables the mounting of the RFM69 module in a smaller space. This adapter also allow the RFM69 board to be used on a common-sized breadboard whilst leaving a free row on pins on either side. It does this by rotating the RSM69 by 90 °. To minimise the size of the adapter, this smaller board doesn’t have spacing for the components in the HopeRF Reference Design, which are now mounted externally.

These adapter PCBs are easy to use – you simply solder the castellated solder pads as required, and then add headers (or other wiring) to the 2.54mm header connectors. Just make sure you make a careful note of any labelling on the underside of the RFM69 module because any labelling will become obscured!

Please verify the pin-out of your RFM module before you buy these PCB adapters.

The design of your circuit is entirely yours. We do not provide any technical support, sorry. Please note that we don’t supply RFM69 modules – we just supply the adapters as single units.
